What is a heat pump?
It’s a “mover” of heat, utilising the available latent renewable heat from the outside air. Put simply, it works on the same principle as a refrigerator but in reverse!
- Extracts thermal energy from the outside air
- Refrigerant liquid in an outdoor unit absorbs the energy and the liquid evaporates into vapour
- The vapour is compressed to increase its temperature
- The vapour is then condensed back to a liquid, releasing its heat into your heating system
- The refrigerant liquid is circulated back to start the process all over again.
